In Adam Winkler's Op-Ed titled "Why banning assault rifles won't reduce gun violence"(3/15/2016), he argues that multiple reasons why Obama's statement on banning assault rifles wont be effective in reducing the gun violence in the United States. The author first states his main claim by just showing his views on the topic with no statistics or evidence to show his point of view on the topic by giving reasons that he thinks that the ban for these guns wont work; he then begins to expand on the idea of the actual term "...assault weapons..." by giving the reader information on guns and also giving counter arguments to make his claim stronger; and then he writes varies historical changes in gun policy and also statistics on the use of guns in crime scenes. His purpose is to make his claim as strong as possible in order to change or make the reader more aware on the subject of gun violence in the United States. He seems to have a broad audience in mind because he wants there to be people who know nothing about the topic and he is trying to make it as simple as possible for those people to understand the situation and then maybe they could help change the policy or be a part of the change somehow.
